Maasai Village Cultural Tour
A trip to Northern Tanzania would not be complete without encountering the enchanting Maasai people.
The most well-known tribe in Africa - the Maasai - are warriors who still continue to practice their ancestral way of life to this day. Known for their pastoral traditions, living off their herds of cattle, sheep, goats, and donkey, the Maasai were traditionally a nomadic people, always in search of water and pasture for their herds. Today, the Maasai still exist on a diet of milk, animal blood and meat, although many of them have established permanent settlements in the heart of the bush.
At Olpopongi, you will have the opportunity to visit a Maasai boma (village) and meet with the tribesmen, woman and children who live there. You will see a traditional singing and dancing ceremony and get a guided tour of the boma while learning about the Maasai culture and history. You will also go on a 3 to 4 hour walking safari through the surrounding plains, guided by two Maasai warriors who will teach you about medicinal plants as you walk. Animals that are commonly seen in the area include zebra, giraffe, buffalo, gazelle and antelope.
Olpopongi is an authentic Maasai Boma (a fortified living compound) and museum with overnight facilities in Tanzania, offering a unique Maasai & wildlife experience. A great destination for families with children, Olpopongi can also accommodate you overnight if you wish to spend more time learning and interacting with these fascinating people.
