Rising 5895 meters above Tanzania’s plains, Mount Kilimanjaro is the tallest peak in Africa and the highest free- standing mountain on Earth. Located in Kilimanjaro National Park, it is one of the most popular climbing destinations in the world, not only because of the breath-taking scenery on the way up to the summit, but also because the traveller can easily combine a trek with other Tanzanian adventures such as a visit to the nearby wildlife reserves.
Climbing to the ‘Roof of Africa’ is the dream of many an avid trekker and even more so because one does not need to be an experienced mountain climber to reach the summit, unlike other well-known peaks around the world. Nonetheless, Kilimanjaro requires a fit and healthy physical state with a good all-round condition. Add to that strong will power and a little bit of luck and you should be able to reach your goal…
Your ascension can take five to eight days to complete depending on the route you take and your level of fitness. There are many routes to choose from with varying levels of difficulty, climbing time, crowdedness and natural beauty. As most of our departures are private, we can be quite flexible and adapt the route to make it shorter or longer according to your preferences and endurance.
When to climb
You can climb Kilimanjaro all year round, but the two dry seasons are the best in terms of weather: the short dry season, from January to March, and the long dry season, from June to October.
The routes to the summit
There are several routes to the summit and among them are Marangu, Machame and Lemosho routes… our personal favourites. However, if you would prefer taking one of the other routes (Rongai, Umbwe or Shira) we can arrange that as well.
Security
No matter which route you take and how many people are in your group, you will always be accompanied by professional guides, a team of porters and one or more cooks. This is essential for the smooth running of the trek. Climbing Kilimanjaro requires optimal safety conditions and your guides will be there to ensure that all conditions are met each morning before the next leg of your trek begins. Your physical and mental well-being will be verified every day and our guides are trained in mountain first aid. They will know exactly what to do in case of an emergency.
